John first joined District 8 at age 14 in 1981 with his father Charlie. They built a B-Mono as their first boat, followed by an A Stock tunnel. By 1984 he had built a pair of Sport 40s and the love for hydroplanes grew into a life-long passion. This is such a great hobby for all ages and skill levels which is what kept him into model boating for the past 41 years.
Like many of our club members, his passion for building, designing and racing model hydroplanes led John into full-size inboard hydroplane racing in the Grand National and Unlimited Light classes from 1995 through 2002. Model boating never left his blood though, and for the past ten years he has not had to risk life, limb or bank account to enjoy the same experience but on a smaller scale.
“I love the people, the race sites are mostly in scenic parks, and the competition is always there if you want it– as several of our member hold national titles and records. After 41 years at this hobby, I have never stopped learning about new build techniques, designs and race strategies. This hobby simply has so much to offer at every corner and I am proud of this past season’s results!” – John Hogan
